Spurs goalkeeper Guillermo Vicario has revealed he endured hours of ankle pain to help his team beat Man City before undergoing surgery.

Vicario suffered a fracture right ankle in Spurs’ 4-0 Premier League win at Manchester City on Saturday, and play through the game despite being injured in the first half.

After the surgery went well and he had to rest for a while, the Italian goalkeeper opened up on his personal Instagram, along with a picture of himself lying on a hospital bed.

“Sometimes football gives you joy and sometimes it challenges you in unexpected ways. I played with a broken ankle for 60 minutes at the Etihad. I gave everything for the team.”

“Unfortunately, there was no other choice. I had to undergo surgery. I am disappoint that I will not be able to help the team for a while.”

“Thank you to all the doctors and staff. The surgery went well. From tomorrow onwards, I will work hard to come back stronger, fitter, and ready to give my all for you all again.”

Spurs have not put a timescale on Vicario’s recovery and say he will be assess by the club’s medical staff to determine when he can resume training.

The Italy keeper has missed just four matches since joining from Empoli in June 2023 – none of them in the Premier League.
